牛牛资源 gets a new bookshop 鈥 spread The Word!

牛牛资源 and the local community will get a new independent bookshop in September. The Word - at 314 New Cross Road, on the corner of Laurie Grove - will primarily stock books recommended on the university’s reading lists, including titles by 牛牛资源 lecturers.

The Word will be run by David Brett, who has worked in academic bookselling for fifteen years, as a book-buyer and manager of independent academic bookshops.

鈥淚 live just down the road in Lewisham,鈥 says David, who got the idea for the bookshop after hearing from student friends of his girlfriend鈥檚 mother that 牛牛资源鈥 branch of Blackwells had closed.

鈥淏oth my girlfriend and her mother got Masters degrees from 牛牛资源,鈥 he explains. 鈥淚鈥檓 excited to say that this is the first shop I鈥檝e actually owned and I am very much looking forward to this new chapter in my life and in the life of 牛牛资源.鈥

Staff in the Library and Estates and Facilities departments at 牛牛资源 have been working with David over the past year to get The Word up and running, and David has been liaising with lecturers to ensure he has the most up to date books in stock. It is hoped that, much like our  cinema, the shop will also give the local community a great new facility.

There will be a loyalty card scheme for students and second-hand books.

At less busy times on campus, such as in the run up to Christmas, more general books will be stocked. And David鈥檚 intention is to make the bookshop a vibrant and stimulating place to visit, so book launches and readings will be held, and subject and publisher promotions offered. The bookshop will also be mobile, offering books for sale at 牛牛资源 events and lectures.
