Narratives of Protest: Textiles by Connie Flynn and work from 牛牛资源 Textile Collection
A Special Collections exhibition for Women鈥檚 History Month featuring Connie Flynn鈥檚 Home & Away banner wall hanging commemorating the Suffragette Movement, work from 牛牛资源 Textile Collection including Catherine Walton鈥檚 triptych, 鈥淭he Demo鈥� picturing street protest during the Thatcher years and a slide show of banners by Thalia Campbell from the Women鈥檚 Art Library.
Artist Connie Flynn鈥檚 Home & Away commemorative banner signifies and celebrates 100 years of some women being able to vote. Similar to some of the original Suffragettes鈥� banners, Home & Away is formed by a collection of recycled clothes and cloth items which relates the movement鈥檚 banner-making to the domestic environment. Home & Away is constructed using a variety of textile techniques as the artist explores her interest in the narrative possibilities of how textiles communicate aspects of personal or social history. The colours carefully chosen to signify and represent the Suffragette鈥檚 palette - purple for freedom, white as purity and green being hope. It was important to her to create the textile banner to make connections between time and events, places and people.
To contextualize this work, items from 牛牛资源 Textile Collection will be displayed reflecting the craft of making such works and the role of textile work in expressing as well as commemorating the work of social change.
Home and Away was exhibited throughout 2018 in London School of Economics Library Reading Room, Harlow Civic Centre 鈥� Essex and as part of the exhibition 鈥淯ndaunted: Our fight for the vote. Suffrage stories of North Hertfordshire鈥� at North Herts Museum.
