Abstract:
In this decade, Spanish activism has been characterised by the Indignados [outraged] movement of the 15-M in 2011. Those protests, which occurred in the midst of the (financial) crisis and the imposition of austerity measures, focused on social and democratic demands, such as political transparency, housing, and employment. After traditional political parties disregarded those protests, the spirit of the 15-M evolved and it was gathered by a new party, Podemos [We can]. In the 2015 and 2016 general elections to the Spanish Parliament, it was the third most voted party but a centre-right coalition eventually established a conservative government. This outcome, along with the peculiar context in Catalonia (the pro vs. against independence discourse monopolised the political debate nationwide), caused that all the social demands disappeared from the political and media agenda throughout 2017. This disappointing context for social claims suddenly has been fissured in early 2018 by two main waves of protests: the feminist and the pensioners鈥� movements. This seminar focuses on the two movements that have succeeded in reactivating protests with social demands in Spain and it examines the highlights of their discourses to trace some reflections on contemporary activism.
Alessandra Farn茅 is a post-doctoral researcher from the University Jaume I in Spain in the Department of Communication Sciences. She is a member of the research group and the Interuniversity Institute of Social Development and Peace. Her research focuses on communication for social change, digital media for citizens鈥� participation, civil society and activism. Her upcoming co-edited book is on "Communication for Social Change: Proposals for action."
